An easy and instant way to do this is to replace the R2 resistor with a potentiometer, and additionally add two diodes in the circuit.
Electronics and semiconductor manufacturers offer a rich selection of hardware and software components that you can use in your project. For example, in building a BDC motor controller circuit for the robotic lawn mower, we used STM32F4, which is part of the STM32 ecosystem for motor control.
Motor is connected as collector load to the transistor. Capacitor C1 by-passes voltage spikes and noises produced by the motor. This filter capacitor is very essential and if it is not there the circuit may not work properly.
For example, if you touch the base with your finger it could cause current into the base and the motor will rotate. This is not mandatory but it is good to include to reduce chances of accidental starting of the DC motor. The DC motor is connected as load at the collector.

Controllers that do receive feedback from the motor are called closed-loop, or feedback, controllers. They can detect deviations from the desired values and correct the control signal accordingly.

Do not cut off more than the plastic insulation so that the copper wire is exposed. Cutting more than the insulation will damage the wires ability to properly carry current and may prevent the circuit from working.

I would like to have a little give though with the transistor, so that if I later get a fan with a slightly higher wattage, it wont burn out the system; hence want to switch from the 800mA limit on the 2n2222a.
The circuit is connected in breadboard as per the DC motor speed control circuit diagram shown above. The pot here is used to adjust the speed of motor.
